For many the words “Live, laugh, love” remind them of a young woman, whose life and death continues to impact Athens and surrounding communities.
It’s been five years since Athens High Student Jessica Elkins, the daughter of Talbot and Michelle Elkins, lost her battle with bacterial meningitis. However, her story continues to remind others about the importance of meningitis awareness and immunizations.
The Limestone Area Community Foundation Jessica Elkins Memorial Fund was set up in Jessica’s honor. During the past five years, the fund has allowed the foundation to award scholarships in Jessica’s honor and help support a free meningitis clinic.
Proceeds from events such as the Jessica Elkins Memorial Pageant make it all possible.
The fifth annual Jessica Elkins Memorial Pageant, sponsored by Miss Model America, is set for Saturday, Feb. 16, in the Athens Middle School auditorium.
The infant through 8-year-old divisions will begin at 2 p.m. The Ugly Walk and age 9 and up divisions will start at 6 p.m.
Proceeds benefit the Jessica Elkins Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Registration will take place from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, and from 11 a.m. until 1 pm. Saturday. There will be a winner and three alternates for each division with a photogenic overall and high point overall at no extra charge. Winners will receive the title of Miss Tennessee Valley Model, a crown, and satin banner and they will win fees in various upcoming events.
Fees are $50 for entry; and $10 each or three for $25 in the photogenic category. Registration for the ugly walk is $10.
