The Limestone County Farmers Federation is holding a food drive during Food Check-Out Week Feb. 17-23.
The American Farm Bureau Federations’ Food Check-Out Week focuses on “Stretching your grocery dollar with healthy, nutritious food.”
Farmers and ranchers across America will reach out to consumers in their communities during Food Check-Out Week. The Limestone County Farmers Federation will host a non-perishable food drive Feb. 18-22.
“When it comes to eating well on a budget, farmers share the same concerns as other grocery-store shoppers,” said Patty Marsh, Limestone County Farmers Federation women’s chairman. “Shoppers can take simple steps to save money. Fresh, in-season produce costs less. Buying frozen fruits and vegetables out-of-season is a great way to stretch a dollar and keep nutrient-rich foods on the menu. When you find a good sale on meat or poultry, stock up and freeze some for later.”
The price of eating healthy foods has remained relatively unchanged, according to studies from the USDA. The cost of fruits and vegetables like iceberg lettuce, bananas, whole carrots, apples, broccoli and tomatoes have remained stable compared to the cost of processed snack foods and desserts.
Residents are asked to participate in Food Check-Out Week by dropping off non-perishable food items Feb. 18-22 at any of the five ALFA offices in Limestone County. All items will go to various food banks in Limestone County.
