Retired Amoco foreman takes up caning

Edward Yarbrough retired as a foreman from Amoco Chemical in 1988, but after a couple of years of leisure he decided he needed to take up a hobby. He read about a community education class being taught at Athens State University on chair caning. Suffering from a significant hearing loss, Edward was hesitant to take the class.

    Three friends. All three have the same job. All three recently became grandparents in the same week. All three babies are boys.
    It’s safe to say there is plenty to talk about when Shirley White Cahall, Linda Pigg and Ivy “Toby” McCune get together this summer. They just wrapped up another full year as East Limestone school bus drivers.


  • Historical Society takes day in Tennessee with noted author
    A great way to meet neighbors in Limestone County is to join the Historical Society or pay $10 and accompany the group on one of its tours.We did that June 12 to Gallatin, Tenn., and had as our tour guide Nathan Harsh, author of “The Art and Mystery of Tennessee Furniture and Its Makers Through 1850.”

    Natives of Clio, Mich., Dick and Marilyn Bachelor divide their time between a home on the Tennessee River at Bay Hill Village and a cabin at Hubbard Lake in northern Michigan. Marilyn, who says she has been painting “seriously” for 20 years, will be among 230 artists exhibiting at the 57th Annual Arts and Crafts Festival n Fairhope.

    Wally and Ginger Laxson of the East Limestone community spent more than 40 years on the road traveling as a gospel music duet. They also raised two sons in an Airstream camper trailer and in more motels and hotels than they can count across the U.S., Canada and the Mideast.

    Mansfield Scott figured if he were ever to realize his lifelong dream of taking a four-corners tour of the United States, it had better be soon. He is set to straddle his new Honda Goldwing 1800 and hit the open road.

    Last week, nearly four years after beginning a Wesley Fellowship at Athens State University, the United Methodist Committee on Evangelism designated Sherri Bassham as the recipient of its prestigious Denman Award, named for Harry Denman, the general secretary of the Committee on Evangelism.
