Limestone County Sheriff’s officials are searching today for a man suspected of robbing a store clerk at gunpoint Thursday night in the Clements community west of Athens.

The suspect — a white man wearing a ski mask, long-sleeved camouflage shirt and blue jeans — entered the Dollar General at 12375 U.S. 72 West about 9:50 p.m., said Limestone County Chief Investigator Capt. Stanley McNatt.

“The clerk was not actually at the register at the time but right behind it and was stocking the coolers near the register,” McNatt said. “The suspect pointed a handgun at her and demanded money, then fled out the front door and went around the building and was last seen going through a field behind Dollar General.”

The suspect, who stands about 5 feet, 10 inches and weighs between 130 and 140 pounds, got away with an with an undisclosed amount of money, McNatt said. Officials believe he was carrying a semiautomatic handgun.

Tracking dogs brought in from Limestone Correctional Facility were unable to pick up the suspect’s scent, he said.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call the Sheriff's Department at 256-232-0111. Investigator Eric King is handling the investigation.
