BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford has given a gift to City Council members he says should end any complaints that his office withholds information. His gift — a mini laptop computer and accessories.

He urged the members to use the computer to make decision on the 2010 operating budget and other city business.

He told the council that now it must perform, just as his office must perform.

Langford ordered 25 of the computers for the council and his staff, totaling $4,975 from the mayor’s office budget. The computers came from Verizon, which provides the city’s wireless service.

Council President Carole Smitherman thanked Langford for the gift, but said it was no substitute for human interaction and updated information.
