Bailey Threadgill Jr.
Graveside services for Bailey Threadgill Jr., 83, of Athens and formerly of Memphis, Tenn., will be at 3:15 p.m. today at Roselawn Cemetery with the Rev. Jimmy Bassham officiating, McConnell Funeral Home directing.
Visitation will today from 2 to 3 p.m. at McConnell Funeral Home.
Mr. Threadgill died Friday, Sept. 28, 2007 at Limestone Health Facility.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Frances L. Threadgill, Athens; daughter, Mary Ann West and husband Ed, Athens; grandsons, John M. Ward and wife Stacy, Athens, Joe W. Ward and wife Mary, Athens, Jeff Ward, Orlando, Fla.; six great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild.
He was originally from Memphis, Tenn. moving to Athens four years ago to be with his daughter. He was an ordained Baptist Deacon giving his life to the Lord as a young man and lived a Christian life. Mr. Threadgill loved remote controlled airplanes and was the president of the RC Flying Club in Memphis for many years. He served in the Army during World War II and was decorated with the Silver Star and the Purple Heart.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Athens.
Jack R. Underwood
Jack Russell Underwood, 81, of Huntsville passed away Sunday, Sept. 23, 2007, in Seattle, Wash.
Born in Forrest City, Ark., he moved to Athens at age 1. He grew up in Athens, where he participated in sports and school politics, forming friendships that lasted a lifetime. Military service took him overseas for World War II and the Korean War, working as a pharmacist’s mate. After returning from the wars, he moved to Huntsville in 1947 and worked for NASA for 35 years, retiring in 1982. He was the night manager of the Universal Plaza Hotel from 1974 to 1980 and manager of the Brooks Apartments and Motel from 1982 to 2004. The past year he has been living in Seattle.
He is survived by his daughter, Jackie G.U. Hobbs and son-in-law David Hobbs, both of Seattle; and two grandchildren, Shafer Shafer of Seattle, and Hunter Shafer and wife Caroline Shafer and great-grandson, Lance Shafer, all of Long Beach, Calif.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Huntsville Memory Gardens.
