Mary Frances Allen Gladney

— The funeral for Mary Frances Allen Gladney, 91, of Columbia, Tenn., will be at 2 p.m. today at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home in Columbia, Tenn., with the Rev. Frank Smith and the Rev. Scott Aleridge officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from noon until time of the service at the funeral home.  

Mrs. Gladney died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, at Maury Regional Medical Center.

The Maury County native was the daughter of the late William James Allen, Sr. and Gladys Wilson Allen. She was a retired teacher.  She attended grades 1-8 at McDowell Elementary School and graduated from Central High School in 1939. She was a graduate of Athens Methodist College where she worked in the library and sang in the Glee Club. She married James Buford Gladney, a pilot who was killed in action in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. Her son, James Buford Gladney Jr. was born shortly after his father was killed.  

Mrs. Gladney taught in Maury County School system for 33 years, starting at Mount Joy and also taught at Santa Fe, Central High School and Whitthorne, where she taught ninth grade for many years. She was an avid reader and loved to travel, having made several trips to Europe. She enjoyed meeting with her high school classmates regularly over the years and was a member of the Retired Teachers Association. In 1930, at age 10, she joined the First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a brother, Ernest W. (Virginia) Allen Sr. of Columbia; sister, Martha Allen Newby of Athens; sisters-in-law, Lorene Allen of Columbia, Wynelle Allen of Pulaski, Tenn., and Bessie Gladney of Athens; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her son, James Buford Gladney Jr. in 2011; sisters, Gladys Clymer, Annie Walker Bailey and Marguerite Allen; and brothers, Evan Marshall Allen Sr., the Rev. Paul Allen and William James Allen Jr.

Nephews will be pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. John Simmons, the staff at Maury Regional Medical Center and her caring sitters, Shelby Owens and Beverly Tennyson.
