Gregory Michael Johnson passed away at his home in Athens on Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, at age 53.
Greg was preceded in death by his mother, Ellen Kalehua Makanoe Alapai Johnson and his father, Charles Oliver Johnson.
Greg is lovingly remembered by his family: one son, Matthew Johnson; five brothers, Edward Ray Johnson, Charles Wayne Johnson, Timothy William Johnson, Adam Corey Blankenship and William Corley Johnson; three sisters, Margaret Ellen Perry, Sharon Lee Naves and Karen “Sissy” Johnson; nine nieces; eight nephews; six great-nieces; six great-nephews; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Greg was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on Sept. 4, 1959. He graduated from Athens High School and continued on to be a veteran of the U.S. Navy as well as a respected and hardworking member of the Southern Millwright Local Union No. 1192 (retired).
Greg was an active member of Clements Baptist Church in Athens and was much beloved by all who knew him there.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at Clements Baptist Church with Pastor Tim Anderson officiating. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Limestone Chapel Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Clearview Cancer Institute Patient Assistance Fund for Colon Cancer, 3601 CCI Drive, Huntsville, AL 35805 in care of social worker, Patty Stutts.
Greg was a fierce warrior whose heart was as big as the world. He watched over his friends and family all his life, and knowing him, he will still be watching over us all, just with a better view! The lives of all who knew him are richer for the time we had with him.
