“Captain” Mays Montgomery Sr.

“Captain” Mays Elliott Montgomery Sr., 92, of Fort Myers, Fla., and formerly of Athens and Huntsville, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013, in Bonita Springs, Fla. 

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at McConnell Funeral Home with Dusty McLemore officiating. Burial will be in Athens City Cemetery.

Visitation is from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at the funeral home. 

Captain Montgomery was born Nov. 30, 1920, in Vincent to Peyton Hale Montgomery and Bessie Mays Montgomery. He graduated from Auburn University in 1942 where he played football and taught intramural sports. He served in World War II in General George S. Patton’s Third Army’s First Armored Division. He served in North Africa and Italy and he received a Purple Heart. 

He was president of the Southeastern Poultry and Egg Association. He was a deacon at the First Methodist Church in Athens. He was on the board of directors at Central Bank in Athens.

Survivors include his wife Sharon Montgomery of Fort Myers; his four sons, Jack C. Stephenson of Birmingham, Bob Montgomery of Durham, N.C., Elliott Montgomery of Athens, and John Montgomery of St. Simmons, Ga.; five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
