Joe Abernathy

— Joe Allen Abernathy, 70, of North Branch, Mich., formerly of Alabama, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013, with his loving family by his side.

Joe was born March 11, 1943, in Limestone County. He is the son of the late James and Geneva (Pepper) Abernathy. Joe grew up and attended school in Limestone County. On Feb. 24, 1967, he married Twylha Prince in Commerce Township, Mich.

Joe worked as a booth cleaner for General Motors, from which he retired after 30 years of service. Joe attended the North Goodland Baptist Church and formerly the Lindsay Lane Baptist Church in Athens. Joe enjoyed golfing and gardening, but most of all he loved spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Joe is survived by his wife, Twylha of North Branch; son, Joe Abernathy of St. Charles, Mich.; daughter, Deanna Moore and husband Phillip of North Branch; grandchildren, Autumn, Kaitlyn, Faith and Spencer; sisters, Margie Moreno of Irondale, Peggy Garland and husband Gene of Athens, Sheila Strain and husband Rick of Athens, Darlene Morris and husband Larry of Waterford, Mich., and Paulette McDowell and husband Matt of Pontiac, Mich.; brothers, Wayne Abernathy and wife Alice of Mansfield, Ohio, Jack Abernathy and wife Betty of Harvest, Douglas Abernathy and wife Karen of Harvest, Scott Abernathy and wife Colleen of Pontiac, and Andy Abernathy of Pontiac; and many nephews, nieces and cousins.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, James and Geneva; brothers, Terry Lee, Charles David and Frank; and sister, Faye.

Memorials may be made to the North Goodland Baptist Church, 3080 N. Van Dyke Road,

Imlay City, MI 48444.

Services were at Blackburn Chapel-Martin Funeral Home in North Branch. Visitation was held from 5-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, and 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 23. The funeral was at 11 a.m. Saturday with Pastor John Chippewa officiating.

Burial was in Westlawn Cemetery in North Branch.
