Linda Gay

— Linda Bryan Gay, 65, of Athens, died Saturday, July 20, 2013, in Wasilla, Alaska, while serving the Lord on a mission trip with a mission team from First Baptist Church of Athens, of which she was a member.

The funeral service was held Saturday, July 27, 2013, in Clearwater, Fla., from the chapel of Sylvan Abbey Funeral Home, with burial in Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park. A memorial service for Mrs. Gay will be at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, at First Baptist Church of Athens, with Dr. Edwin F. Jenkins and Larry Hicks officiating. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m.

Linda’s passion was loving people, and she had a special fondness for children. She worked in special education with elementary school children and she took on a personal cause for children with disabilities. She adored her grandchildren and the way their parents were raising them in a Christian home. Linda loved her mother-in-law, Gaye Gay, whom she called daily. Linda loved to travel, many times with Mandy to Israel, and to other Christian events in Gatlinburg and the Bahamas. Linda’s love of travel and the military came from living in Guam, Okinawa and many other locations in the United States while her father served in the Army. After graduation from Mississippi University for Women, she served in the U.S. Army as a first lieutenant in the Women’s Army Corps. While stationed at Fort McClellan in Alabama, she met the love of her life, U.S. Army Capt. Oscar Gay. Their service continued with their son, Capt. Jason Gay, who served in the U.S. Army. Linda loved her country and was proudly given military honors at her burial site.

Linda is survived by her husband, Oscar of Athens; her son, Jason Gay and wife Virginia and their children, Abigail, Nathaniel and Andrew, all of Versailles, Ky; and her daughter, Amanda Gay of Clearwater, Fla.

She is also survived by her brother, James “Dee” Bryan and wife Sandra of Seneca, S.C.; and many friends and extended-family members.

The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to The Gideons International, First Baptist Church Mission Fund or Alabama Baptist Children’s Home. Spry Funeral Home of Athens is assisting the Gay family.
