Sam was born Aug. 3, 1933, in Athens, the fourth child of Samuel Alexander Mitchell and A.Z. Locke. His childhood, youth and young adult life were filled with work, some of which was fraught with hazards of which he said he had been fortunate to have survived.

Though both his parents were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Sam joined the church on July 24, 1952, just 10 days short of his 19th birthday.

On Jan. 22, 1960, Sam married Valeria Lodeska Moore Mitchell in the Salt Lake Temple. To their union were born four children, Kari, Shelley, Rodric and Xan.

Sam was preceded in death by his wife, Valeria Lodeska Moore Mitchell.

There are four surviving children and their spouses: Kari Maleah Mitchell Millward and Fredrick L. Millward of Elkmont, Shelley Teress Mitchell Merrill and Ricky L. Merrill of Athens, Rodric Hampton Mitchell and Shauna Turley Mitchell of Orange Park, Florida, and Michelle Xan Mitchell Kucejko and Richard S. Kucejko of Athens.

There are eight surviving grandchildren and spouses: Thomas Sullivan Merrill and Tianna Lynn Higley of Buena Vista, Virginia, Shazlan Alexandria Mitchell Moreno and Jose Armando Moreno of North Jacksonville, Florida, Samuel Walter Kucejko, Jared Shane Merrill and Chelsea Elizabeth Kucejko, all of Athens, Heidi Linette Mitchell of Orange Park, Florida, Katelyn Maleah Kucejko of Athens, and Andrew Hampton Mitchell of Orange Park.

There are three surviving great-grandchildren: Trenton Jose Moreno and Sharli-Anne Lizeth Moreno, both of North Jacksonville, and Nathan Sullivan Merrill of Buena Vista.

Sam is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, family members and close family friends.

Funeral arrangements will be conducted by Spry Funeral Home of Athens where visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. Monday, June 30.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 1716 W. Market St. in Athens with Bishop Ryan A. Black officiating. Interment will be at Roselawn Cemetery in Athens.
