Benton Ball

The funeral for Benton Blair Ball, 81, of Athens will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 30, at Spry Funeral Home with David Cox and Jordan Lovell officiating. Burial will be in Dement Cemetery.

Visitation is from 6-9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, at the funeral home.

Mr. Ball died Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, at home.

Benton Ball was born April 28, 1932, in Limestone County to Luther and Brentie Graham Ball. Mr. Ball became a Christian as a teenager and was a member of the Market Street Church of Christ. He was a 1952 graduate of Clements High School and graduated from Athens College in 1972. He retired from Wolverine Tube in Decatur. Mr. Ball was a U.S. Army veteran.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Garner Ball; and son, Randy Ball.

Survivors include his wife, Gayle Ball of Athens; son, Anthony Ball and wife Ellen of Athens; daughters, Wanda Gunter and husband Mike, and Carol Lee and husband Frankie, all of Athens; stepson, Jimmy Woodward and wife Joy of Athens; stepdaughter, Phyllis Lomax and husband Curtis of Athens; sisters, Bell Long of Arkansas, Naomi Garner and Wilma Dean Adams, both of Athens; grandchildren, Kristi Sowell, Jason Gunter, Brittny Owens and Lela Ball; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Pallbearers will be Stevie Garner, Greg Thomas, Eric Brock, Jimmy Woodward, Curtis Lomax and Chris Sides. Honorary pallbearers are elders and deacons at Market Street Church of Christ, and his nephews.
