Shirley Gilliam Ray-Hart of Minor Hill, Tenn., died of cancer on Tuesday, Nov. 13,2012, surrounded by her five sisters and close friends.
Shirley was born Nov. 28, 1946, in Norton, Va., to Manson Gilliam and Lois Price Gilliam.
She was preceded in death by her mother in 1971.
She graduated from Butler High School and went to work for the Department of Human Services in Huntsville. She then worked as a civil servant on Kwajalein Island and later on Redstone Arsenal. During the last decade of her life, she was active with several ministries at her church.
She is survived by her husband Daryl Hart; father, Manson Gilliam; stepmother, Lanell Gilliam; sisters, Linda Thrailkill and husband Tom, Mary Jane Powers and husband Larry, Sandy Yarbrough and husband Greg, DeeDee Patty and husband Russ, Beth Onder and husband John; eight nieces and nephews; two great nieces; one great nephew; and many loving friends.
She will be most remembered for her love of fun, competitiveness at Scrabble and sharp wit.
There will be a memorial service in her honor at 2 p.m. Saturday at Friendship United Methodist Church in Athens. Family will receive friends at 1 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in her name to Oak Tree Memorial Garden at Friendship United Memorial Church.
