Comer Heine

— CW3 Comer Matthew Heine Jr., USA (Ret), 89, of Athens, entered into rest on Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2013. He was born Aug. 30, 1924, in Omaha, Neb., to the late Comer Matthew Heine Sr. and Dorothy Ann Heine.

He was both a veteran of World War II, serving in the 176th Ordnance Depot Company, and of the Korean War, serving in the 302nd Military Intelligence Service Company. Mr. Heine served in numerous assignments around the world in various U.S. embassies, and finished his service in 1969 as an instructor for the Attaché Staff Course as part of the Defense Intelligence Agency in Washington, D.C. Mr. Heine worked for the U.S. Department of Commerce National Technical Information Service from 1969-1982 and then moved to Snow Hill, Md., where he was the director of transportation for the Worcester County Commission on Aging from 1982-1987. He spent a brief period in Salisbury, Md., from 2003 to 2006, and subsequently moved to Athens in 2006 due to his wife’s failing health.

One of Mr. Heine’s greatest memories of late was to participate in the second Honor Flight from Huntsville to Washington, D.C., to visit the WW II memorial and other memorials in the nation’s capital.

His beloved wife, Ruth Helen Heine, and daughter, Karen Ann Tone, precedes him in death.

He is survived by his son and his wife, Kurt and Barbara Heine of Harvest; grandchildren Tracey Leigh Heine of Huntsville; and Lauren Elizabeth Clark of Huntsville and other extended family members and friends, who will forever treasure his memory.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial donations to any chapter of the American Cancer Society.

Bennett-May-Giles County Funeral Home, Pulaski, Tenn., is in charge of arrangements.
