A memorial service for Rodney Smith, 58, of Oakland Park, Fla., formerly of Athens, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at McConnell Funeral Home with Otis Bentley officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
Mr. Smith died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012, at his home. He was born July 22, 1954, in Ft. Oglethorpe, Ga., to Granville Lewis Smith and Mary Smith. He attended East Limestone High School. He served in the U.S. Army and he was also a certified deep-sea diver. He was an underwater welder prior to his retirement.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Smith Ray, his father, Granville Lewis Smith, his stepfather, Julius Ray, and a brother, Jamie Smith.
Survivors include a daughter, Sianna Smith of Ardmore; three sisters, Patty Ricketts of Pulaski, Tenn., Katy Gracy of Chattanooga, and Elizabeth Whortan of Hillsborough, N.C.; one brother, Houston Smith of Oakland Park, Fla.; two step-brothers, Steve Ray of Huntsville and Kelly Ray of Virginia Beach, Va.; nieces, Camilie LaFoy, Scarlett Paredes, Kendall Whortan; nephews, Patrick Turner, Victor Paredes, Houston Smith Jr., and Dylan Smith; great-niece, Addison LaFoy, and great-nephews, Robert Turner and Hayden LaFoy.
