Mattie Griffin

— The spirited life of Mattie “Irene” McCurry Stapler Griffin, 83, came to an end Sunday, Sept. 18, 2011, at Winter Haven Hospital in Winter Haven, Fla., due to injuries sustained from a fall. 

Ms. Griffin was born June 29, 1928, in Athens. She was of the Baptist faith.

Ms. Griffin was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Griffin; son, Billy Griffin; grandsons, Christopher McGee and Eddie Grant; siblings, Remus Nitchell of Elkhart, Ind., Leo McCurry, Leon McCurry, Annie Mae Pendergrass of Athens, and Louise Harrison of Winter Haven.

She is survived by her former husband, Amos Stapler; her sons, Larry Griffin and wife Mildred of Athens, Michael Griffin and wife Elaine Powell of Winter Haven; her daughters, Janice Griffin and husband Manley Lawson, Belinda Brown and husband Herman, Theresa Thompson and husband Steve, Donna Griffin and husband Glenn Wilkinson, Emma Sims and husband Randy, Leisa Stapler Crowell and previous husband Amos Stapler, all from Winter Haven; and her sister, Ozelle Harrison of Elkhart, Ind. She was “Nanny” to 21 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, at First Baptist Church of Eagle Lake, 2500 Highway 17 South, Eagle Lake, Fla., with a small reception to follow.

There will be a memorial in Athens at a later date.
