James Thomas “J.T.” Black, 77, of Athens died Wednesday at Athens Limestone Hospital.
Mr. Black was born April 22, 1936 in Morgan County. A Vietnam U.S. Navy veteran, he retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber and was a member of Pleasant Valley Church of Christ.
Visitation will be Thursday from 6-9 p.m., services will be Friday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Spry Funeral Home with Don Osborne and Bert Wilson officiating. Burial is at Limestone Memorial Gardens with military honors. Nephews will serve as pallbearers, grandsons and granddaughters as honorary pallbearers.
Mr. Black is survived by his wife of 58 years, Shirley Wyvona Casteel Black of Athens; sons, Steve Black and wife, Gina of Decatur; Thomas Black and wife, Debbie of Elkmont; daughters, Pam Malone and husband, Hilton; Susan DeBerardinis and husband, Bob; Kim Holt and husband, Jamey, all of Athens; sisters, Ruby Naylor, Edith Birdwell, Arlene Embody Sherry Scruggs, all of Athens; six grandchildren; three step-grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Black was preceded in death by his parents, Houston and Berta Black, four brothers and three sisters.
