Samuel Garraway Jr.

The funeral for retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Samuel W. Garraway Jr., 76, of Athens will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 8, at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home. Visitation is 9:30-10:45 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Mr. Garraway died Tuesday, March 4, 2014.

Samuel W. Garraway Jr. was born in Columbia, Miss. He joined the Army in 1954 as a private and retired in 1987 as a lieutenant colonel. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska-Omaha and his master's degree from Shippensburg University in Shippensburg, Pa. He attended the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pa., in 1986. 

Mr. Garraway was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel W. Garraway Sr. and F. Arlynne (Harribson) Garraway. 

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Vera (Pollard); Sam and Vera’s three children, Phyllis Fisher and husband Kyle of Springfield, Neb., Samuel Garraway III and wife Vipa of Tampa, Fla., and Martha Younkin and husband Kevin of Athens; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. 

He is also survived by his brother, Joe Garraway Sr. and wife Ginny of Zachary, La.; sister-in-law, Carol Frazier of Independence, Mo.; and six nieces and nephews. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to COPD Foundation.
