Paul French Thomas

— Paul French Thomas, 96, of Huntsville, passed away Saturday, April 20, 2013, after an extended illness. Mr. Thomas was born on April 22, 1916, in Athens to John Larkin Thomas and Florence Belle Thomas.

Paul was the last surviving sibling of a family of 11 children. He married Ethelene Franklin Thomas in December 1947 in Limestone County. Ethelene passed away in May 1992.

Paul spent his early years farming in Limestone County then began a successful adult career as a building contractor in North Alabama.

Paul was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying bird hunting and fishing with family members and friends throughout his life. He and Ethelene had a home on the Elk River where they enjoyed sharing the joys of fishing and quality time with several generations of the Thomas and Franklin families. Paul dearly loved walking the fields of Limestone and Madison counties with his bird dogs in search of a covey of quail or spending a beautiful fall day in a corn field hunting doves. In his later years Paul enjoyed ballroom dancing at several locations in the Huntsville area.

Paul is fondly remembered by family and friends for his engaging personality and personal story telling. He always made a special effort to spend time with the family children and tell stories of his adventures as a youth and young adult.

Paul is survived by three generations of nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m.  Monday at the Valhalla Funeral Home on Winchester Road in Huntsville. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Huntsville Memory Gardens with Everette Conn officiating.
