Ida Watkins

— Ida Ruth Gibbs Watkins, 91, of Shallotte, N.C., and formerly of Athens, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center in Bolivia, N.C.

Ruth was born to George Wallace Gibbs and Mary Margarette Sumerau Gibbs on Dec. 14, 1921. She was raised in Evans, Ga., on the Gibbs family farm.

She graduated from Evans High School at the age of 15 and from the Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, Ga., at 19. She taught school in Lyons, Ga., where she met William Mark Watkins. She and Mark married in 1941. They had 3 children, Rita, Bill and John, who they raised in Dublin, Ga., where Mark practiced medicine and Ruth cared for their children. Mark passed away in Athens on Aug. 15, 1997.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Rita M. Peterson on Dec. 13, 2012, and her sister, Marge Manship.

Ruth is survived by her sister, Kathy Steinbruegge of Atlanta, Ga.; and sons, John Edward Watkins and wife Amy of Shallotte, and William “Bill” Mark Watkins Jr. and wife Shelley of Evans, Ga.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be private.

Ruth never met a stranger, she never had anything bad to say about anyone, and she never held a grudge. She was a free spirit and didn’t concern herself with what others thought or said.

Memorials may be directed in her name to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.
