Mary Shipp

The funeral for Mary Elizabeth Shipp, 83, of Huntsville will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Spry Funeral Home with Mickey Elkins officiating. Burial will be in Athens City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Ms. Shipp died Sunday, May 12, 2013, at Huntsville Health and Rehab.

Mary Shipp was born Feb. 3, 1930, in Limestone County to Dewey and Alice Black Shipp.

She was a member of the Church of Christ and lived most of her life in Limestone County, where she graduated from Athens High School in 1948.

Mary was known for her wonderful cooking ability and worked as a cook in several restaurants in Athens as well as Mullins Restaurant in Huntsville. She was also known for her great sense of humor and was aptly named with the initials M.E.S., as she was a “mess” who liked to make people laugh.

She lived most of her senior years at Todd Towers in Huntsville and was known for her generosity as she cooked and shared meals with the residents who were unable to cook. Her last year was spent at Huntsville Health and Rehabilitation where she received loving care from many, including her nurses, Kathy, Bridgette and Shannon as well as her workers from Hospice Family Care.

Mary will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Bobby, James and Billy Joe Shipp and grandson, Chad Elkins.

Survivors include children, Denise Elkins and husband Mickey of Muscle Shoals, Kathy Graham of Huntsville, Robert Graves and wife Kathey of Arlington, Texas, and Jim Graham and wife Deanna of Lacey Springs; grandsons, Todd Elkins, Zack Graham, Taylor Graham and Payton Graves; granddaughter, Jasara Graves; five great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Darling of Wisconsin; and three nieces and one nephew.
