Shirley Crawford

— Shirley Hooks Crawford of Athens passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at the age of 76.  She was surrounded by family and friends as she departed this life. She will always be remembered for her beautiful smiles.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 10, at McConnell Funeral Home with Eric Pugh officiating. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery where she will be placed with her late husband of 44 years, retired Gunnery Sgt. Edgar William Crawford.

She was born in Millen, Georgia on Nov. 1, 1937.  She was the eighth of nine children of the late Lester and Maxie Lanier Hooks.  She attended a business school and served as a bookkeeper and manager for two large retail stores.  She was a devoted and caring mother.  She loved to go for long rides and her passion was working and caring for her yard and flowers. 

She was preceded in death by her sister Maxine Hooks and her brothers Sidney, Cubby and Lloyd. 

Survivors include daughters, Alice Faye Crawford of Atlanta, Deborah Ann McMurtrey and husband Charles Leonard McMurtrey III of Athens; son, Edgar William Crawford Jr and wife Kayo Crawford of Hawaii; sisters, Rebecca Barbel of Fayetteville, Georgia, Mary Meyer of Peachtree City, Ga., and Haddie Cochran and husband John of Blue Ridge, Ga; brother, Lester Hooks of Millen, Ga; grandchildren, Jasmine Hanuka Crawford, Edgar James Shion Crawford, Rebecca Ann McMurtrey and Charles Leonard McMurtrey IV; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Shirley Crawford to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC  29605-4277.
