Oliver Dempsey McLemore, 89, passed away Saturday, May 10, 2014, at Athens-Limestone Hospital.
He was born to Oliver Delma and Ada Gordon McLemore on June 27,1924.
He graduated from Tanner High School in 1943 and attended Athens College on the GI Bill. He was drafted in the Army in 1943, and chose the 82nd Airborne as a paratrooper because the training at Ft. Bragg N.C., was the closest place to Athens, where he left his sweetheart. He was a prisoner of war for 11 months in Germany. He was the recipient of a Purple Heart as well as several other medals. In 1945, he married his beloved sweetheart, Virginia Dare Christopher. They were married 68 years. He worked at TVA, Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant as a pipefitter and retired in 1988. He was a member of the Pipefitters Local 670. He was a member of Round Island Baptist Church.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Round Island Baptist Church, with visitation beginning at noon, with the Rev. Mike Green, the Rev Bill Bailey, the Rev. Dusty McLemore and Dr. Mike McLemore officiating. Burial, with military honors, will be in Limestone Memorial Gardens with Spry Funeral Home directing.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Dare Christopher McLemore; a daughter, Ginger Martin and husband, Granville Martin, of Athens; two sons, Dr. Mike McLemore and wife, Wanda Casteel McLemore, of Birmingham, and the Rev. Dusty McLemore and wife, Patsy Holland McLemore, of Athens; seven grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Alvis McLemore and Bobby McLemore, of Athens; and two sisters, Marjorie Reece and Jennifer Holmes, of Athens.
He is preceded in death by his parents; a, brother, Billy Ray McLemore, and two sisters, Betty Faye McLemore and Catherine Griffin.
Pallbearers will be Grant Martin, Clint Martin, Brandon McLemore, Skyler Martin, Chase Robinson, and Luke Robison. Other grandson's and great-grandson's will be honorary pallbearers.
