Boeing news is good for us

Boeing may have tossed this area a bone with the announcement it was locating a research center in Huntsville, but there’s a lot of meat on it.

And we welcome it.

According to state officials, Boeing expects to hire 200 people next year and another 150 to 200 in 2015. There will also be jobs created for construction of the center, which will be just across the Limestone-Madison County line.

The announcement is great news because of our proximity to Huntsville and the ease of travel to and from the Rocket City for commuters.  The jobs would be for current residents as well as those from other areas whom we should welcome as our new neighbors.

The facility, which will include Boeing’s Center for Simulation and Decision Analytics and Center for Metals and Chemical Technology, may also create jobs for students graduating from the robotics program at Calhoun Community College.

The state is also in contention for an assembly facility for Boeing’s new 777X airliner in Huntsville near the aerospace company’s facility at Huntsville International Airport.

Boeing is expected to make that announcement early next year. The competition involves several cities, including the company’s home base of Seattle.

Limestone County officials are hoping for good news about the 777X facility because of its positive economic impact that would go hand-in-hand with the research center. The assembly plant would bring thousands of jobs to our area.

In the meantime, we’ll savor what we have.
