A festive time around the area

The holiday spirit is alive and well here.

The weather outside is not quite “frightful” but it is definitely December.

And, whether it’s parade watching and marching or cider sippin’, ‘tis the season for us.

On Thursday, thousands of people lined Athens’ streets, braving sub-freezing temperatures and bone-chilling winds to watch the annual Reliance Bank Christmas Parade.

More than 170 entrants paraded from Athens High School, down Jefferson Street and through the Square before wrapping up at the Hometown Grocery shopping center.

It was a great turnout considering the parade was postponed from Dec. 5 because of the threat of rain and people changed their plans to view this year’s edition.

The floats were simply amazing and creative and, of course, the high school bands entertained the crowd with their Christmas tunes.

Speaking of parades, the annual Elkmont Lions Club Christmas parade stepped off Saturday afternoon.

Also Saturday, downtown Athens merchants competed for the best cider and the Cider Cup. Shoppers sampled the refreshing drinks while taking advantage of sales at the stores.  There were also arts and crafts for the kids to provide something for everyone.

If you also have a chance, drive or walk around the Square at night and see how wonderful it looks with the lights around the courthouse and businesses.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year …
