Unfamiliar but welcome sound at night

There was an unfamiliar sound in our house the other night.

It wasn’t anything eerie or strange.

Just unfamiliar.

Our son Shane, his wife Amber and their two-month-old son Mason came for a holiday visit.

They live about 200 miles away in Livingston and it was their first time here since Mason was born.

Anyway, back to the noise.

The noise wasn’t a mystery. It was some whimpering and whining from an obviously unhappy Mason.

Now, I’m not complaining – even though it was 1 a.m. – it was almost a welcome sound.

With it came a rush of memories.

Our youngest is 17, so it’s been a while since we heard the sounds of an infant over the baby monitor in the middle of the night.

Truth be known, the boys mostly slept through the night when they were babies so when we heard something, it was out of the ordinary.

There were the late-night fevers, upset stomachs and, of course, some wet diapers.

We would awake from our slumber and immediately tend to the ailing children.

Sometimes medicine was needed while other times just reassuredly rocking them back to sleep was the prescription.

This week, though, it was a combination of Mason being tired – it was a big day for him and everyone else – and, possibly, an unfamiliar surroundings.

There was also a welcoming reaction to Mason being upset.

His mom and dad were the ones getting out of bed to take care of a baby in our house.

And we welcomed being able to go back to sleep.
