A community torn asunder

— Monday the fury of the skies opened up and dropped a devastating tornado on the western part of Limestone County and portions of Athens. By now, this should be a familiar scenario for the citizens of this community who have experienced destruction, death and heartbreak from killer storms too many times in the past.

It almost seems that Limestone County is a magnet for twisters — as it is sometimes referred to as a “tornado alley.” Whatever the reasons for this atmospheric phenomenon, we feel terrified, helpless and alone when one of these monsters is bearing down on us.

But in the aftermath, as we survey destroyed homes and lives, we find we are not alone.

Just as in previous disasters, the magnitude of the tragedy strikes a cord in surrounding communities that realize it could have very well been them.

We are heartened by the outpouring of help that has come in from outside our community from organizations, agencies, governments and religious groups.

They provide meals, cut up downed trees, clear debris, restore utilities, direct traffic, comfort survivors and tackle hundreds of other tasks.

It is impossible to thank each and every one of these people who roll up their sleeves and work side-by-side with local rescue agencies and volunteers to rescue, reclaim and rebuild our community.

So we’d like to take this opportunity to say a heartfelt “Thank you!” on behalf of the citizens of our county.
