Glass situation must not happen again

“I sincerely apologize to the local citizens that fund our school with their hard earned money, my wife and children, friends, church and the students and faculty of Elkmont High School and the Limestone County Career Technical Center as well as the administration and members of the Limestone County Board of Education for my wrong and illegal actions.

“I sincerely ask forgiveness from all whom I have wronged and disappointed for the terrible example I set before the students of Limestone County.

“My first steps toward trying to earn back the respect of my family and community is to fully admit my wrong and illegal actions, accept full responsibility and make restitution for the damage that I am responsible for.

“Again I am truly sorry for what I have done and ask forgiveness.”

That’s the statement on behalf of former Limestone County Career Technical Center Director Mickey Glass issued through his attorney, James Irby.

Glass pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree theft, although he was accused of stealing thousands of dollars worth of school equipment, and was sentenced to 10 years in prison on both counts.

Through a plea agreement, the sentence was suspended and he was placed on supervised probation for five years. He also had to resign as the center director and pay restitution for the equipment — some of which he sold on eBay and Craigslist and others that he had at home and for his lawn care business.

The county school board added to the penalty by banning him for life from any Limestone County school.

His actions clearly disappointed friends, family and others who knew him — or thought they knew him.

What Glass did was criminal but the fact he was able to get away with it — at both schools — is unacceptable.

In December, the central office approved of annual inventory assessments instead of every two years.

Hopefully, that will provide the increased oversight so this does not happen again.
