Silence is deafening in wake of Bean Day debacle

“Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word” is a classic song by Elton John.

It also seems to fit the lack of response from the Foundation on Aging, the organization that sponsored the ill-fated Bean Day that left dozens sickened and even several  hospitalized a couple weeks ago.

You see, the organization has yet to offer an apology. In fact, no one from the foundation has been available for comment — after two weeks. Messages left were not returned and, at other times, the phone has gone unanswered.

It seems the foundation has turned its back on its supporters.

And that’s a sad situation.

Bean Day is one of the more popular fundraisers.  Folks look forward to it and the community reaches into its collective wallet to help out the foundation.  Here at The News Courier, most of our staff bought bean plates.

But now we have to wonder if the support will be there next year for this worthy cause. People will naturally be wary of the meals so they will be hesitant to buy them or flat-out reject them.

So, the question is, will there even be a Bean Day next year?

There’s no telling because no one’s talking.

And that’s a sad situation.

People are forgiving. People realize mistakes are made.  We know the bad beans were not intentional so just own up to the mistake.

Come on Foundation on Aging. You owe the community a simple apology, that’s all.

Sorry doesn’t need to be the hardest word.
