Opportunity knocking; make sure to answer

— “Opportunities are never lost; someone will take the one you miss.” The author of this quote is unknown but that doesn’t lessen its meaning.

One such opportunist is Norm Brown with Onyx Aerospace. The Athens native took advantage of the opportunity known as the U.S. Small Business Administration’s HUBZone program. HUBZone stands for Historically Underutilized Business Zone. The program was established in 1997 and encourages economic development in these zones.

Parts of Athens and Limestone County are in a HUBZone and Brown set up his company in the Sykes Building on the Limestone County Courthouse Square.

This is also an opportunity for the city and county.

A HUBZone opens the door for small businesses to start up which, in turn, revitalizes distressed areas by providing access to more federal contracting opportunities.

There are certain requirements that businesses have to meet to qualify for the program, which offers preferences in bidding on contracts.

So, congratulations to Onyx for taking the opportunity and, hopefully, that will encourage other businesses to move here and provide opportunities — economical and otherwise — for our community.
