STAFF EDITORIAL: Plenty to do around town

— That familiar refrain “there’s not anything to do around here” doesn’t carry well in Athens and Limestone County.

If you couldn’t find anything to pique your interest over the weekend, there’s no helping you.

This town was a virtual beehive of activity from morning until night Saturday.

It all started with the Opening Day for the youth softball and baseball leagues. Hundreds of kids, parents, grandparents and others turned out at the Sportsplex for the parade of players with softball leading off at 9 a.m. and the baseball teams marching in at 10 a.m.

After that, there were games all day.

Also in the morning was the Athens Historic Walking Tour. Local guides led the way  as visitors took in the sights of the state’s second-oldest city.

In the afternoon, this year’s edition of Cruisin’ on the Square rolled into downtown Athens.

Vintage cars were parked around the Courthouse from 3 to 9 p.m. with the owners proud to show off their “babies.”

This was just the beginning, too, as the weather warms up, so do the activities.

Be sure to check it out.
