Tanner, Ardmore QB's recognized for performance

ATHENS — Landon Stephens provided a big punch offensively for the Tanner High football team Friday night as the Rattlers recorded their fourth straight shutout this season.

The junior quarterback gave Tanner an early 20-0 lead, scoring on runs of 3,11 and 58 yards. He finished the night with 130 yards rushing, while passing for 171 yards and another touchdown in the 40-0 win.

“West End was reading Tray (Cosby) a lot, so that allowed me to be more open,” Stephens said.

Meanwhile, in the northern part of the county, Ardmore earned their first victory of the season behind the play of senior quarterback J. Tribble. Tribble finished the night 14-of-19 for 222 yards and a touchdown.

For their efforts, the two have been selected as The News Courier’s Co-Players of the Week.

“J. did a great job of managing the game in the second half,” Ardmore head coach Shannon Brown said. “There were times when he could have thrown the ball, but instead ran to get the first down.”

Other notable performances from across the county this week include:

Ryan Horton, Athens:Caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Stephen Rivers with four seconds left to lift Athens past Austin 45-41. The Black Bears had taken the lead just 35 seconds earlier at 41-38. Horton finished with 197 yards rushing on 33 carries in addition to his clutch touchdown reception.

Brandon Sanderfer, Clements:Despite the Colts loss, Sanderfer had 220 yards rushing on 22 carries. He also scored three touchdowns.

Hayden Huseth, Elkmont: The junior quarterback was 13-for-25 passing for 200 yards with five touchdowns in the Red Devils triple overtime loss to West Limestone. Huseth also rushed 26 times for 138 yards.
