Trojans earn trip to Montgomery

The Athens Bible School baseball team showed its fans a little bit of everything in its state semifinal series against Shoals Christian.
In the opening game, the Trojans lost by 10 runs. In the second game, they defeated the Flame by 11 runs.
Saturday, ABS showed its fans a close game as the Trojans rallied from a late deficit to beat Shoals Christian 8-6 and advance to the state finals in Montgomery.

  • Athens Bible sweeps Speake
The Lady Trojans are heading to Montgomery to compete for the state championship after sweeping third-ranked Speake High School Saturday. Abbie Melvin threw two complete games for ABS, and Allie McCurry led the ABS offense with five hits in the doubleheader.
ABS jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of game one. McCurry and Brooke Chittam hit RBI singles, and Kerri Pender pounded a two-out, two-RBI double for the Lady Trojans.

  • They nicknamed him ‘Fast Freddie’
In the history of Auburn football, few freshmen have made anything close to the impact on their teams as Freddie Smith did.
A heavily recruited star out of Athens High School, he exceeded even the most optimistic expectations through his contributions in the fall of 1976, the year Doug Barfield took over as head coach for the Tigers.
That’s the story told by Mark Murphy in a publication about “Memorable stories of Tigers Football.”

  • East, Athens fall one win short of state title game
Championship dreams ended for two local soccer teams Friday as the East Limestone boys and Athens girls lost in the state semifinals.
The Indians lost 2-1 in the second overtime period of a closely contested game.

  • AHS earns trip to state
The Ardmore High School softball team secured a spot in the state tournament Friday with a 5-1 victory in the deciding game three of its second round sub-state series against Cherokee County.
The series started rough for the Lady Tigers, who lost 7-2 in the opening game. Ardmore rebounded with an impressive performance in the second game as they won 10-0 in five innings to force game three.

  • ABS and East baseball to play decisive games today in semis
After dropping the first game to visiting Shoals Christian 14-4, ABS needed a strong pitching performance to keep their season alive.
A.J. Price delivered, hurling six shutout innings in a complete game four-hitter. He used a bevy of off-speed pitches, baffling the Flame the entire game as the Trojans cruised to an 11-0 victory.
“A no-hitter last week, a shutout this week, the sophomore is coming through for us,” Athens head coach Bill Murrell said. “This was his eighth playoff start; he has ice-water in his veins.”

  • Bone becomes first Athens girls basketball player to sign in 4 years
Candice Bone has experienced highs and lows during her career in the Athens basketball program.
During her eighth grade season, Bone was on a team that did not win a single game.
Fast forward four years, and Bone led the Eaglettes to a 24-6 record and missed the playoffs by only one game.

  • Four teams in semifinals today
Four local teams will be playing for a chance to advance to the state finals in two different sports today.
The Athens girls soccer team and East Limestone boys soccer team will play semifinal matches at John Hunt Park in Huntsville while the Athens Bible School and East baseball teams will play in the state baseball semifinals.

  • East tops Wilson to advance
The East Limestone High School softball team advanced to the second sub-state round of the playoffs after dominating Wilson Tuesday.
The Lady Indians cruised to a 15-3 win in the first game and continued to roll in the second game, winning 10-0.

  • ABS and Ardmore advance in substate
The Area 15 champion Athens Bible School Lady Trojans hosted the runner-up of Area 12 the Lady Raiders from Marion County Tuesday and took two of three games to advance in the state softball playoffs.
In the first game, ABS took a 3-1 lead into the seventh inning, but Marion County plated three runs in the top half of the 7th inning to take a 4-3 lead and would win the first game of the three game series.
