Championship dreams ended for two local soccer teams Friday as the East Limestone boys and Athens girls lost in the state semifinals.
The Indians lost 2-1 in the second overtime period of a closely contested game.
Danny Boersma scored in the opening half for East. Randolph also scored in the first half, but neither team could score again during regulation or the first overtime period.
Josh Appleby and Cory Wood each received a yellow card during the match.
It was the Indians third playoff game this season. All three games have gone to at least two overtimes.
Both sub-state games were decided by penalty kicks.
The Eaglettes fell behind early in their 3-1 loss to Decatur.
Decatur scored its first goal less than a minute into the game and added another with 24:17 remaining in the first half.
Brenna Horrocks scored on a penalty kick with 30:19 left to play in the game to pull Athens within a goal.
Decatur played the game’s final 22 minutes without one of its players after she was issued a red card, but the Eaglettes could not take advantage.
Decatur put the game away when it scored with 5:12 remaining.
Athens keeper Lauren Polk recorded 12 saves in the loss.
It is the second year in a row Athens has reached the semifinals.
The Eaglettes lost to John Carroll in last year’s semis.
