MONTGOMERY — Elkmont and Athens Bible School remained unbeaten Friday in the state softball tournament setting up key games today with No. 1 ranked teams.

The Lady Red Devils (28-13) remained perfect through two games with an 8-1 win over West Brocton. The Lady Trojans got another key pitching performance from Abbie Melvin and cruised past Hubbertville, 4-0.

Ardmore, meanwhile, was defeated by St. James (32-4) 3-0 in the Class 4A opener. The Lady Tigers were playing their second game late and no score was available.

Anna Grace Usery led Elkmont with a home run and double with three RBIs and Candice Biggerstaff slapped three singles.

Meghan Honea started for Elkmont on the mound. She pitched into the fourth inning and was relieved by first game winner Sarah Solomon who finished the game.

Honea helped her cause with two doubles and an RBI; Brandi Gooch smacked a triple with an RBI; and Courtney Phillips hit two singles with an RBI. Bailee Robinson, Tisha Jeffreys and Stephanie Hogan all singled.

The win set up a key match up at noon today against No. 1 ranked Pisgah. The winner will be the only team left in Class 3A in the winners bracket.

Melvin has pitched the first two games for the Lady Trojans and has given up only one earned run. Her pitching performance Friday was outstanding.

She pitched a three-hitter against Hubbertville. She struck out four and walked none.

ABS went ahead in the second inning when leadoff batter Brooke Chittam singled and advanced to second on a single by Chelsea Burgess. Emily Irwin then had an infield hit to load the bases. A walk to Katie Eubanks scored Chittam.

But the one run was all the Lady Trojans would get.

In the third inning, ABS put together another rally when Melvin reached on an error and Chittam singled and Keri Pender walked.
