Rivers to hold inaugural football camp in Huntsville next week

From Staff Reports

San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers will be in the Rocket City next week.

Rivers will be in Huntsville to host the inaugural D1 Iron Sharpens Iron Philip Rivers Offensive Skills Camp from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 7 and 8. The camp will be at the Huntsville High School football fields and open to ages 7 to 17.

The camp will feature 10 hours of instruction from Rivers along with local high school coaches and D1 training experts. In addition, the Philip Rivers Camp will encourage character development and life skills. Each participant will also receive lunch, camp T-shirt, camp poster and the opportunity to win other prizes.

Rivers, a former Athens High School standout, has held a camp in the past in Raleigh, NC., where he went to college. This will be his first camp in Huntsville with the D1 Sports staff, a facility that he co-owns in Jones Valley. The camp is being sponsored by The Orthopaedic Center (TOC) and Huntsville Hospital.

“It is fun for me to get more involved in the North Alabama community,” Rivers said. “I am excited to come back home and give the same instruction that I received when I was growing up in this area.”

Rivers was drafted in the first round with the fourth pick in the 2004 draft by the San Diego Chargers. His career totals include a Pro Bowl in 2006 and 10,697 passing yards. In 2008, Rivers had the highest quarterback rating in the NFL with a league-leading 34 touchdown passes, 105.5 passer rating and a league-best 8.4 yards per pass.

The cost of the camp will be $175. To register, visit http://www.philipriverscamp.eventbrite.com/.
