Gators set records, take second at RACE League championships
Mallory Underwood helped set four meet records at the RACE League championships to help the Athens Gators swim team earn a second-place finish.
She set three individual records — 25-meter freestyle, 100-meter individual medley and 25-meter fly — and swam on the under-8 girls relay team that set a meet record in the 100-meter freestyle relay.
Other members of the relay team include Annie Calatrello, Emma Aaron and Savannah Fleming.
It was a successful meet for the Gators as the team recorded 97 Top 10 finishes in several events across six age groups.
More than half of those — 59 — were Top 5 finishes and 11 relay teams finished in the Top 3.
It was not a bad showing considering there were 550 swimmers competing at the event.
The youngest age group was 6-and-under. In girls’ action, Sophie Bodiford finished fourth in the 25 freestyle and fifth in the 25-meter backstroke.
Henry Calatrello finished third in the 25 freestyle and ninth in the 25-meter breaststroke in the 6-and-under boys meet.
In girls 8-and-under action, Underwood was first in the 25 freestyle while Fleming finished fifth and Aaron finished 10th.
Annie Calatrello finished second in the 25 breaststroke, Aaron was sixth and Kade Sparks was seventh.
Underwood was first in the 25 fly, Fleming was fifth, Grace Martin was ninth and Kobie Melton was 10th. Underwood was first in the 100 individual medley while Annie Calatrello finished third.
Annie Calatrello finished second in the 25 backstroke while Martin finished ninth.
In the 8-and-under boys division, Ryan Rodriguez was first in the 25 fly and second in the 25 freestyle. John David Matthews was fifth in the 25 fly and sixth in the 25 freestyle while John Oliver was seventh in the 25 breaststroke and Hampton Key was third in the 100 individual medley, sixth in the 25 fly and eighth in the 25 breaststroke.
The 9-10-year-old girls division had four swimmers place in the Top 10.
Katelyn Melton was first in the 50 freestyle, third in the 25 fly and sixth in the 100 individual medley while Lindsey Roberts was second in the 50 free and fourth in the 25 backstroke. Sarah Tipton finished second in the 25 breaststroke and the 25 backstroke while Caroline Matthews was third in the 25 breaststroke.
