Gators set records, take second at RACE League championships

Mallory Underwood helped set four meet records at the RACE League championships to help the Athens Gators swim team earn a second-place finish.
She set three individual records — 25-meter freestyle, 100-meter individual medley and 25-meter fly — and swam on the under-8 girls relay team that set a meet record in the 100-meter freestyle relay.
Other members of the relay team include Annie Calatrello, Emma Aaron and Savannah Fleming.
It was a successful meet for the Gators as the team recorded 97 Top 10 finishes in several events across six age groups.
More than half of those — 59 — were Top 5 finishes and 11 relay teams finished in the Top 3.
It was not a bad showing considering there were 550 swimmers competing at the event.
The youngest age group was 6-and-under. In girls’ action, Sophie Bodiford finished fourth in the 25 freestyle and fifth in the 25-meter backstroke.
Henry Calatrello finished third in the 25 freestyle and ninth in the 25-meter breaststroke in the 6-and-under boys meet.
In girls 8-and-under action, Underwood was first in the 25 freestyle while Fleming finished fifth and Aaron finished 10th.
Annie Calatrello finished second in the 25 breaststroke, Aaron was sixth and Kade Sparks was seventh.
Underwood was first in the 25 fly, Fleming was fifth, Grace Martin was ninth and Kobie Melton was 10th. Underwood was first in the 100 individual medley while Annie Calatrello finished third.
Annie Calatrello finished second in the 25 backstroke while Martin finished ninth.
In the 8-and-under boys division, Ryan Rodriguez was first in the 25 fly and second in the 25 freestyle. John David Matthews was fifth in the 25 fly and sixth in the 25 freestyle while John Oliver was seventh in the 25 breaststroke and Hampton Key was third in the 100 individual medley, sixth in the 25 fly and eighth in the 25 breaststroke.
The 9-10-year-old girls division had four swimmers place in the Top 10.
Katelyn Melton was first in the 50 freestyle, third in the 25 fly and sixth in the 100 individual medley while Lindsey Roberts was second in the 50 free and fourth in the 25 backstroke. Sarah Tipton finished second in the 25 breaststroke and the 25 backstroke while Caroline Matthews was third in the 25 breaststroke.
Ben Magnusson finished third in the 50 freestyle and the 25 backstroke and fourth in the 100 individual medley while Austin Tucker finished 10th in the 25 fly in 9-10 boys action.
Miriam Aaron was second in three events — the 50 freestyle, the 50 breaststroke and the 50 backstroke — in the 11-12 girls meet. Other Gators in that age group with strong finishes include Melissa Aaron — fifth in the 50 fly, eighth in the 50 breaststroke and ninth in the 50 freestyle — and Madelyn Breeding — third in the 100 individual medley and fourth in the 50 backstroke and the 50 fly. Lindsey Martin was seventh in the 50 freestyle while Emily Leopard was 10th in the 50 breaststroke.
Jack Calatrello had the best day for the 11-12 boys meet. He was second in the 50 freestyle and the 50 backstroke and third in the 100 individual medley. Alex Rodriguez was seventh in the 50 freestyle, eighth in the 50 breaststroke and 10th in the 50 backstroke. William Matthews was fourth in the 50 fly and Bent Key was seventh in the 50 fly.
Jessica Lambert picked up three first-place finishes — in the 50 freestyle, the 50 breaststroke and the 100 individual method — at the 13-14 girls meet while Hayley Stewart was first in the 50 backstroke, second in the 50 fly and third in the 100 individual medley. Madelyn Oliver was sixth in the 50 backstroke and seventh in the 50 fly while Emmie Bodiford finished sixth in the 50 breaststroke and ninth in the 50 backstroke.
Thomas Calatrello was second in the 13-14 boys 50 breaststroke, fifth in the 100 individual medley and eighth in the 50 freestyle while Matt Counter was fifth in the 50 fly, sixth in the 50 backstroke and seventh in the 50 freestyle.
Rebecca Aaron earned a pair of fifth-place finishes in the 50 breaststroke and 50 backstroke and was ninth in the 100 individual medley at the 15-18 girls meet. Victoria Beck was third in the 50 breaststroke, sixth in the 50 fly and seventh in the 100 individual medley while Joela Aaron was eighth in the 50 breaststroke and Grace Anne Aaron was ninth in the 50 breaststroke.
In 15-18 boys action, Matthew Davis was sixth in the 50 backstroke and ninth in the 50 breaststroke while Ross Sims was 10th in the 50 backstroke and 50 fly.
Relay teams were also successful
The 8-and-under girls mixed relay, the 8-and-under girls free relay and the 9-10 girls free relay finished first.
The 13-14 boys mixed relay, the 8-and-under boys free relay, the 11-12 boys free relay and the 13-14 girls free relay finished second.
Four other relay teams finished third.
