The Limestone County 13-year-old All-star baseball team captured the state title last weekend at the Dizzy Dean State Tournament in Northport to clinch a spot in the World Series.

The Limestone County team lost only one game in their march to the championship, outscoring their opponents 29-11.

They beat Albertville 3-2 in the championship game on an RBI hit by Chris Mayberry into deep center field.

The key to the title was excellent pitching and strong defense.

The tournament Most Valuable Player trophy was awarded to the Limestone County pitching staff, comprised of Matthew Franks, Caleb Roberts and Tanner Russell, all of East Limestone, and Zach Wilson of Elkmont.

Limestone County pitchers recorded 36 strike outs and only seven walks in 33 innings of baseball. They were backed up by a defense that committed only six errors in the entire tournament.

Leading the offense for Limestone County was Clay Russell of West Limestone and Chris Mayberry of East Limestone with five hits each.

Cody Baucom of Clements and Franks contributed four hits each, while Cameron Ashmore of East Limestone and Cole White of Clements added three hits each.

Zach Wilson had a pair of hits and Caleb Sherrill of Clements and Blake Hamilton of East Limestone each contributed a hit to the winning effort.

White and Mayberry each recorded four RBIs, Franks had three RBIs, Hamilton and Baucom had a pair of RBIs and Roberts drove in one run.

The Limestone County team continues its season July 26 by representing the state of Alabama in the Dizzy Dean World Series tournament in Southaven, Miss.

The team is coached by Pat Ashmore and assistants Chris Sherrill, Rick Roberts and Roy Franks.
