By Butch Meneffe
Tanner found success in the air and on the ground last night as they took charge in the second half and buried the Red Bay Tigers 41-14 to move their record to 7-0 for the year.
Rattlers Coach Laron White was understandably pleased.
“It felt good to get our first win ever at Red Bay. Our defense played the best second half defense they’ve played this year,” said White. “I felt going in that if we played well and kept our composure we could win the game.”
After a scoreless first quarter both teams combined for 35 points in the second quarter to break the game wide open. The Rattlers scored on the first play of the second quarter on an 8-yard run by Tray Cosby. Mark Adams kicked the extra point and the Rattlers led 7-0.
Red Bay answered on a 13-yard pass from Cody Palmer to Cody Tucker. Chase Lindsey made the kick to tie the score 6:01 to go in the quarter.
The Rattlers struck back on a 17-yard run by Cosby. Adams PAT gave Tanner a 14-7 lead. The Tigers answered with a 63-yard run from Cody Tucker. Lindsey tied the game at 14-14.
Tanner scored again at the 2:57 mark on a 1-yard run by Marquis McDonald set up one play earlier by McDonald’s 50-yard run. Adams gave the Rattlers a 21-14 halftime lead.
Tanner added two scores in the third quarter. Three plays into the quarter Cosby found the end zone on a 56-yard run. Adams kick made it 28-14.
With 5:41 to go in the third, Cosby scored again on a 20-yard run. After a 5-yard penalty on the PAT the Rattlers tried and failed a two-point conversion leaving the score 34-14.
Tanner’s last score came on the first play of the fourth quarter, an 11-yard pass from Dominique Randolph to Marquis McDonald. Adams kick was good to make it 41-14.
Tanner moves to 7-0 for the year.
Tray Cosby led the Tanner offensive assault with 21 carries for 180 yards and 4 touchdowns.
“He’s a tough kid who always gives 100 percent,” White said of Cosby.
