Prep basketball: Malone helps Athens to OT win over Brewer
From Staff Reports
Tyree Malone came through in a big way for the Athens High boys' basketball team Monday night.
The senior, who finished the night with eight points, went 8-for-8 from the free throw line during the fourth quarter and overtime to help the Golden Eagles seal a 78-67 win over Brewer.
The win marks the first one of the Stace Tedford era.
"This was good for the kids," Tedford said. "We ended the game with five football players on the floor and they just sucked it up and found a way to win."
Monday's matchup was Athens' third game five days, with several of the players only having practiced less than a handful of times due to football. One of those was Julius Jones, who paced the Golden Eagles with a team-high 24 points. Tracy Twitty and Neil Malone each had nine points.
Meanwhile, in varsity girls action, the Lady Golden Eagles fell 70-62 to Brewer.
Ashley Jackson had 19 points for Athens, followed by Lecresha Horton with 14 points and eight assists. Karschella Toney contributed with nine points while Elizabeth Ming recorded seven points and eight rebounds. Ciera Jones had seven rebounds and four points.
In other varsity girls action, Elkmont fell to Randolph 37-23.
