— SELMA, Ala. (AP) — Officials in Selma say thieves are dismantling the city's youth baseball fields piece-by-piece.
City parks director Elton Reece says someone is taking apart fences one section at a time, apparently to sell the metal poles and chain for scrap.
Reece says the thefts have been going on over the past few months. First someone took the top rails, then they came back and clipped the links, then they took metal poles out of the ground.
The Selma Times-Journal (http://bit.ly/11uwPqf ) reports that estimates of the cost to repair the damage are well above $20,000.
Reece says the parks department has reported the thefts to the Police Department. It also has notified area recycling yards about the possibility of poles and fencing possibly being brought in as scrap.
