Ex-Auburn player Kitchens pleads guilty to robbery

OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) — Former Auburn football player Shaun Kitchens pleaded guilty to first-degree robbery and was sentenced to serve three years in prison.

Lee County Circuit Judge Christopher Hughes gave Kitchens, 21, a 15-year split sentence on Thursday requiring him to spend three years in jail for a robbery committed with teammates at an Auburn trailer park in March 2011, according to court documents.

A probation hearing is scheduled for Sept. 9. Kitchens' attorney, Todd Crutchfield, did not immediately respond to phone and email messages seeking comment.

Kitchens, who also received a $2,000 fine, and three teammates were charged with five counts of first-degree robbery and one count of first-degree burglary.

Mike McNeil was sentenced in April to 15 years, and also must serve at least three under a guilty plea. Antonio Goodwin was convicted and is serving 15 years .

Dakota Mosley is scheduled for trial on June 10.

The players were pulled shortly after the robbery two months after Auburn won the national championship. Police found in the vehicle a handgun and items reported stolen. Then-Tigers coach Gene Chizik dismissed them from the team that day.

McNeil was a starting safety who had 14 tackles, 12 of them solo stops, in the national title game win over Oregon. Goodwin and Kitchens mostly played on special teams in 2010 while Mosley, a tight end, was redshirted.
