Ardmore beats Charles Henderson 6-0 in opening game of 4A finals

— MONTGOMERY — One down, one to go.

With a 6-0 shutout of defending state champion Charles Henderson in the opening game of the Class 4A championship series Thursday night, Ardmore inched one step closer to winning the school’s first baseball title.

"It's an awesome feeling," Ardmore ace Cody Reed said. "We're one game away from making history. I'm ecstatic. I've been pumped all week long. I just went out there and tried to do my job and be a senior leader."

Like every game he's pitched this season, Reed had another dominant night on the mound, striking out 13, while limiting the Trojans to just three hits. Leading up to the series, Charles Henderson had scored at least 10 runs in 17 games this season.

"This wasn't my best day, but I had a good game," Reed said. "I guess I just had it. It's always great anytime you can take the mound with a lead. You're more calm and way more confident. It's just a great feeling."

However, the highlight of the night came from the Ardmore offense. The Tigers pounded out nine hits, including a triple and double from Thomas Davidson, Ardmore's nine hole hitter.

"We were sitting on it early," Ardmore coach Andrew Smith said. "We were able to help ourselves by getting a couple of runs early."

The Tigers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead following a two-RBI double by Reed, and an RBI-single by Hunter Moore. From there, Ardmore added one run in the second, one in the third, and one in the fourth.

Davidson and Reed led the Tigers at the plate, each going 3 for 2. Moore went 2 for 4.

"I'm proud of our guys," Smith said. "They came out reedy to go. A lot of people were worried about how we would do being our first time here, but we came out ready to go. We've been ready for it all week. We got game one, now we've got to start getting ready for game two."

Game two of the series is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Riverwalk Stadium in downtown Montgomery.
