ASWA names Lee, Thomas Mr. and Miss Basketball

—  Dallas County's William Lee and Sylacauga's Shakayla Thomas are Alabama's Mr. and Miss Basketball.

The Alabama Sports Writers Association honored the players Wednesday at a luncheon presented by the Alabama High School Athletic Directors and Coaches Association.

Lee is a UAB signee who led Dallas County to the Class 4A championship. He averaged 22.2 points, 12.7 rebounds, 9.2 blocks, 3.9 assists and 3.4 steals per game. Lee, the state's Gatorade Player of the Year, holds the national record for blocks in a game with 26.

The 6-foot-9 Lee scored 22 points with 13 rebounds and seven blocks in the title game.

Lee, the Class 4A Player of the Year, heads the ASWA boys Super 5. That group includes Class 5A Player of the Year Justin Coleman of Wenonah, Giddy Potts of Class 5A Athens, Class 6A Player of the Year Lewis Sullivan of Hazel Green and Class 1A Player of the Year Wesley Person Jr. of Brantley.

Lee and Coleman were named to the Super 5 for the second straight year.

The other boys players of the year were Joshua Langford of Madison Academy (3A), Cobe Goosby of Elba (2A) and AISA's Torrence Brown of Tuscaloosa Academy.

Langford is a three-time player of the year selection while Lee, Sullivan and Person are two-time winners.

Thomas is a three-time member of the girls Super 5. She's was joined by Morgan William of Class 6A Shades Valley, Class 6A Player of the Year Alexis Jennings of Sparkman, Class 2A Player of the Year Leah Strain of Woodland and Class 4A Player of the Year Destiney Elliott of Oneonta.

Sierra Jones of Madison Academy was picked as the top player in Class 3A while Anna Claire Noblit of Covenant Christian was chosen in 1A and Glenwood's Tamara York in AISA.
