Softball all-stars split two games

Hoover — The Softball South All-Stars got the best of the North All-Stars Tuesday in game one but it was a different story in game two.

Athens senior Brianna Caldwell played in both games for the North where she was one of the heroes at the plate but struggled on the mound.

Caldwell walked in her only time at bat in the first game. In the second game the Athens hitter had the go ahead RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to give the North an 8-4 win.

The clutch hit was redemption for Caldwell who, in two innings, walked four South batters and allowed three runs, including a three-run homer off the bat of Caitlyn Sapp to give the South an early 3-0 lead.

The North would seize the lead in the bottom of the fourth scoring four runs but it was short lived as the South scored a tying run in the top of the fifth to make it 4-4.

But in the end it was Caldwell and her teammates who found a way to pull out the win in the bottom of the seventh to split the Tuesday doubleheader.

Game one of the double dip was night and day as the South shut out the North  3-0.

Despite collecting eight hits, the North failed to cross home plate.

The South broke up a scoreless game with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Another run in the bottom of the fifth sealed the win.

South All-Star pitchers Devin Brown, Raina Lanier and Deborah Elmore combined to strike out seven North batters.

Lanier, who pitched the fourth and fifth innings, earned the win while Elmore recorded a six out save en route to the win.
