2 Athens players on All-State soccer team

— After three consecutive state championship game appearances, the Athens girls soccer team is finally getting the recognition it deserves. The AHS girls team had two players on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Alabama All-State team.

Athens’ Riley Ridgeway and Tiffani Dunaway were the only players from a public school selected for the team, that is voted on by Alabama High School girls soccer coaches.

Athens had three other players — Miranda Hudelston, Kaitlyn Wise, and Kate Morgan on the honorable mention list. Bristol Countess and Jordan Runion were honorable mention selections from East Limestone.

Countess led East Limestone with 23 goals and 14 assists and finished her career as the all-time leading goal scorer in Limestone County history. Runion scored 16 goals for East Limestone, which lost to Athens in the opening round of the playoffs.

Ridgeway, a versatile senior who can play either forward or midfield, led Athens with 14 goals and 18 assists this season. A four-year starter, Ridgeway finished her career with the most assists in school history.

“She is highly competitive,” said Athens head coach Stace Tedford. “She played at a high gear the entire season. She was the one that was always out there competing. She led by example.”

Dunaway, a junior, made the All-State team as a goalkeeper. The 2013 5A state tournament MVP, Dunaway had 89 saves this season.

“She got better; more confident as the season went on,” said Tedford. “She really did a good job to be in the right position. She adjusted and corrected her mistakes. She did a very good job of being verbal a lot more than I thought she would be going in. She was very vocal.”

Hudleston played defensive midfield for Athens and served as one of the team captains. A four-year starter, the senior scored 11 goals and had six assists. Wise scored nine goals and had five assists as a striker while Morgan had 12 goals and three assist playing left wing.
