Athens' Hendrix earns Rookie of Year honors for Spanish Basketball League

— Richard Hendrix has been in the running for Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year on several occasions throughout his basketball playing days. But he had never been selected for either honor — until now.

Recently, the Athens native was voted the 2010 Jugador Revelacion of the ACB league, which roughly translates to the Rookie or Newcomer of the Year award for the Spanish Basketball League. While on team CB Granada this year, he led the team in points and rebounds all season. He finished the year averaging 13.1 points per game, 6.9 rebounds, 1.4 steals and blocked shots, and held a 66 percent field goal percentage.

“I was very honored when I found out,” Hendrix said. “I never had really won an award like this before. Every time I had been in the running, I normally finished around second or third. To finally win it and to have those efforts rewarded is a great feeling.”

The award was broken down into almost a handful of different voting categories, including one for coaches, members of the media and fans.

“I’ve had a good following from my hometown, and I’m thankful for the support Athens has shown,” said Hendrix.

As a member of team CB Granada, Hendrix spent nine months overseas in Spain. And while it may have taken a few weeks to get accustomed to his new lifestyle, he eventually caught on to everything.

“The big thing was the language barrier,” Hendrix said. “I took a Spanish course in high school and that was enough to get me started. I started speaking well as the season went on. It was a very valuable experience.”

Hendrix said he plans to take a few weeks off before participating in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas and Orlando in July.
