Tanner head coach Larry Greene knew what to expect entering last month’s trip to the Final 4 in Birmingham. The veteran coach had been there three times before, winning it all in 2011.
This year was different.
After 24 years coaching varsity basketball, Greene thought he had seen it all, only to have one of his most unexpected seasons end at the BJCC. Greene may have done his best coaching job to date in 2013, and he has been voted the Girls Coach of the Year by his fellow coaches.
“That’s the first time I’ve had a group come that far,” Greene said. “To start 3-10 and finish at the Final 4, I can’t say enough about how much they stuck together and turned around the season.”
Another trip to Birmingham looked unlikely just a month before Tanner found itself in the 2A semifinals for the second time in three years. A tough schedule saw the Lady Rattlers win just three out their first 13 games. Five teams on the schedule in Class 3A or above reached the Northwest Regional semifinals.
